Stories met Internet | Goodbye mainstream (media)!

Roughly 6 weeks ago, I randomly uninstalled Whatsapp followed by Twitter, LinkedIn and deleted the social media folder on my phone. (except Instagram)

Why? Let us keep it for later.

This activity gave me enough time to declutter from the existing noise that my phone emitted eventually harming voices in my head. I developed a habit of running and invest more time in knowing the world around me.

My passion for stories and journalism helped me sail through my college. So much so that I became an ‘engineer who journals’ on the campus. Regardless, I was not someone who could ‘create’ videos. Luckily, I invested time to acquire this skill, my first independent video shall be out soon and ended up with an offer to create for a national daily.
But I am trying to make a different point here

I was lunching with media professional a few weeks ago. Into the conversation, the friend asked me to share a few interesting stories that she can present to the audience of her company. There is no second thought about the fact that this was the success of Stories Worth Sharing bringing the unconventional stories to masses through our limited digital outreach.

What further left me amazed was the power of stories which met the internet leaving the mainstream media irrelevant! The luxury of knowing what happens around me in my language (courtesy: youtube) left many giants to take a run for catching public attention and eventually, the revenue share.

Let me tell you a short story here:
Yesterday, I was hanging out with Mr Naveen Kumar Chandra and his wife. We were shooting a video recording his story. Mr Chandra is an IAS of 2018 batch posted in district Malda (West Bengal) for his district training. The city is infamous for child marriage which needs immediate attention. How to counter this? Education!

Mr Chandra recognised this and using his power and influence, he invested available resources and involved UNICEF to teach coding to 40 girls. The result will improve the chances of employability as well as help them live a better life.

Now, this should have made national news by now! Imagine the impact of the project if replicated pan India. The fact that we are still unaware of this effort explains why the mainstream media has been left irrelevant!

Regardless, if you wanna gauge the impact of vernacular stories, look out for the regional youtube channels serving the ground reports in Marathi and Haryanavi (as the two states go to elections!)
